Cease and desist

Michael Shermer's lawyers ordered PZ Myers to immediately retract his public allegations of rape at a science conference, but based on the fact that no retraction has yet been made, it appears PZ intends to ride or die with the unidentified accuser.
This firm represents Michael Shermer. It recently has come to our attention that you have made, published, broadcasted, and are continuing to publish and broadcast on your blog numerous false, defamatory, libelous, inaccurate, and/or misleading statements about Mr. Shermer.

We are informed that on or about August 8, 2013, you authored and posted an entry on your blog entitled What do you do when someone pulls the pin and hands you a grenade? The Entry contains numerous false and defamatory statements about Mr. Shermer based on certain unsubstantiated allegations purportedly made by an unidentified woman against Mr. Shermer....

As you are the author of one of the most popular science blogs in the World Wide Web, we find your self-proclaimed intentions "to do the right thing" by publishing unproven and unsubstantiated allegations of forced or nonconsensual sexual intercourse against Mr. Shermer to be outrageous and inexcusable.  It is not accident that the Entry containing these extremely inflammatory and defamatory statements about Mr. Shermer has garnered your blog the highest number of comments of any entry in the history of your entire Blog and you clearly stand to benefit substantially from the posting of these unsubstantiated allegations against Mr. Shermer, all while under the appearance that you have some higher ethical purpose for doing so. Clearly, no matter how reasonably foreseeable it is that your actions would result in serious harm to Mr. Shermer's name, reputation, and character in the science community, you have chosen to injure and humiliate Mr. Shermer by publishing and posting defamatory statements and comments about him.
Here is the entire letter in PDF form. What a pity this was a science conference instead of a science fiction one, or the SFWA's Pink Gestapo could have waddled to the rescue.

I have absolutely no idea what did or did not happen, but based on the sort of women who attend science conferences and hang out with atheists, I would be very, very leery about putting too much confidence in a secondhand version of events.

First Hugo Danger, then PZ/Shermer. One would assume McRapey's inevitable meltdown is lurking on the horizon. However, I don't think he'll be the next SFWA member accused of sexual assault at a conference. My money is on Jim Hines, aka McCreepy.  His volunteer counseling reminds me of the elementary school teacher with the mustache who is always pestering parents to let him take their little boys camping with him.

At this point, I find it hard to believe that any men risk attending conferences where there are going to be a lumpening of avowedly feminist women. It strikes me as playing Russian Roulette with three bullets in the chamber; these women are absolutely dying to be able to cry harassment and tell the story of their victimization for the rest of their lives.

Personal experience and observation has made it abundantly clear that only a fool would white knight in such a situation.

Which PZ Myers is, of course.

Anonymous BluntForceTrauma August 15, 2013 4:07 PM

Yes, they want to play victim the rest of their lives, but they also want a legal jackpot to make up for their books that don't sell.

This is going to be a sight to behold.

If Shermer backs down, well, there goes a prominent New Atheist, and the whole movement is one step closer to a feminist takeover. He can't drop the lawsuit without looking like he's basically admitting guilt, and adding fuel to the 'the New Atheists are a bunch of sexual assault perpetrators' charge.

If PZ backs down, he'll either be a man who abandons women (well, anonymous women) when he's in a jam, or he got duped so hard that his ability to evaluate evidence outside of his narrow, meager expertise will be further called into question, at the very least.

Apparently Myers' first instinct when handed a live grenade about to detonate is to become a suicide bomber.

I'm guessing PZ will back down pretty quick.

Posting criminal allegations against someone like that is serious business. He apparently bought the allegation hook, line, and sinker and reposted it without thinking through the possible consequences.

Now that he sees he has something to lose, he can probably see the wisdom in distancing himself from this mess.

OpenID malcolmthecynic August 15, 2013 4:20 PM

The problem is, we're the type of guys who follow this stuff. Everybody knows when Dawkins' new books come out, but outside the conservative blogosophere I don't know ANYBODY who knows about these rape allegations. Really, literally anybody. I don't think it's going to affect the movement as much as you guys think unless a really big name actually gets convicted.

Anonymous MrGreenMan August 15, 2013 4:21 PM

Either way, one of them is gone in disgrace, and good riddance, although Shermer at least seems considerably less smarmy. Is Al Sharpton needing a replacement at PMS?

Hopefully the Minnesota community college system can get caught in the crossfire here for providing a podium for PZ.

Vox, what have you got against true Scotsmen? Putting "Mc" in front of everything defames the wrong group.

But as I said in the other thread, Pharnycation is no sin. And "Pharney" Z Meyers can go as an ancient (double entendre intended) purple cephalapod - but who will be willing to be his baby (2) bop?

On a more serious note, Penn Gilette (of Penn and Teller) is the only Atheist that I know of that isn't stupid or corrupt, but if you start tracing the harassment meme, the James Randi foundation also has serious accusations. With Penn having written a half tongue in cheek missive on morality, I think it would be very interesting and on point to ask him about this moralass.

The thing is, backing out now would be humiliating to him. Not to mention, I honestly wonder if Myers is too dumb to really suss out which of his various options truly is the best one.

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to enjoy watching the Godless Left devour itself. After all, those parasites are only turning on themselves because there's nothing left of the corpse of Western civilization that now lies in a pile of hollow bones, fuming odoriferously from exposure under a relentless, uncaring sun.

But I suppose, since there is nothing else, I might as well amuse myself with watching those vile, misshapen wretches turn on themselves, hungry for the blood of those who, in better days, they would consider as kin.

Naturally one would use a fake name for such a purpose.

Shermer's main sins seem to be being pretty chill for an atheist, and perhaps more interested in debunking things like Bigfoot and psychic powers; he has not drunk the Kool-Aid that is Athiesm Plus, which is for those militant internet atheists who wanted to hitch their wagon to "social justice" and also find new ways to accuse each other of not being comitted enough to the Cause; Myers is their ultimate Avatar, he's recently released a book that's more like a collection of blog posts entitled "The Happy Atheist" which seems ironic since his blogs are a non-stop parade of impotent fuming and outraged histrionics, and the usual ranting and raving and internecine wars over the role of women in the movement, and by "women" I mean easily enraged, obnoxious, attention-seeking nerd-ettes with borderline personality disorders, the only women this New New Athiesm movement seems to attarct.

I’m closing comments here, since Shermer has decided to invoke the Streisand effect and make more noise about this — and he may try legal compulsion to force me to delete the post and your comments. All this may disappear if that happens, so I’ll call a time out on further additions.

On a completely unrelated subject, the lady in red featured in Apples ad Super Bowl ad was wearing an ipod. Check it out. White ear buds and all.

On the SFWA, I remember making popcorn when I was a kid. We put the popcorn and some oil in this thing that looked like a pressure cooker and plugged it in (yes we had electricity). As soon as it heated up all the kernals began popping and jumping all over the place, bouncing off the lid. It sounded like a machine gun. When I noticed these two posts, That's what I was reminded of. It may have been a decent organization at one time but the bottom crawlers have taken it over.

All this stuff about "on advice of counsel" means absolutely nothing. It's probably somebody's step cousin. This reminds me of a lawsuit my homeowners association got into over a tree that was planted without permission. They made a complete laughing stock out of themselves and got themselves booted out of office at the first opportunity.

Blogger JDC August 15, 2013 5:46 PM

So the anonymous woman reported this to "an" organization, who summarily swept it under the rug. But wait, there is corroborating evidence - a witness! Well, really not a witness, but a woman who was in her presence immediately following the incident, and noticed that she was extremely distraught, and reported it to the management of the conference.

So an organization was informed and did nothing. The management of the conference was informed and did nothing. Did someone forget, that this type of crime is to be reported to the police? (Well, we all know that women who report rapes are 100% of the time abused, ignored and vilified by the po po's, so I'm sorry for even bringing that up).

PZ is not only going to have to answer to Shermer, but the not-named organization, and the management of the event.

Anonymous UtahDan August 15, 2013 5:47 PM

I believe men should continue to attend these conferences. However, we should refuse to enter ANY discussions with the female set. "Theodore Beale responds to Jemisin’s GOH speech on his blog using appallingly racist and threatening language. He promotes his blog post through the @SFWAAuthors Twitter feed." )

I just read some of the comment's on PZ's blog post on the unnamed woman's rape allegation.

To sum up the attitude of most of these silly, melodramatic women and white knighting gamma males is;

Due to the monstrous and reprehensible nature of the crime to which Sherman is being accused he must therefor be held guilty and publicly exposed as the pariah that he (probably) is. We in the atheist community need to demonstrate that unlike other, less enlightened groups, we "brights" will not tolerate any male who even happens to be the recipient of a rape claim.

Their whole stinking edifice is imploding.

OpenID rufusdog August 15, 2013 7:01 PM

Penn is, in the classic sense of it anyway, an Agnostic. That said I realize he has gone all over the map with the question and plays with the definition of both a quite a bit. But, ya, he seems like the decent sort.

I met him in college; I was working back stage at one of their shows as a crew member. He didn’t give off the rich famous snob “I’m better than you” sort of vibe that some of the other famous folks that came through there did. Their show was very good.

Anonymous John J. Johnson August 15, 2013 7:18 PM

Blogger Jordan179 August 15, 2013 7:46 PM

It's because of the feminist premise "Women never falsely claim to have been raped." This is clearly false on the face of it: humans can lie about anything, both men and women are humans, thus both men and women can lie about rape.

That's what happens when one abandons fundamental logic in favor of political correctness.

Anonymous Red Comet August 15, 2013 7:54 PM

Events like these, and the people involved, are so predictable that you can chart the entire course of events right now.

Prediction 1: The blogs will refuse to identify the woman because that would victimize her or something. A falsely accused man being identified, conversely, is never a victim because white privilege.

Prediction 2: The blogs won't present any evidence for the crime because evidence is sexiss and not taking a woman's side instantly is patriarchy brainwashing.

Prediction 3: The evidence will have to come to light despite the usual bullshit (re: 1 and 2) in any kind of defamation suit. Oops.

Prediction 4: Once actually presented, the evidence will show this to be yet another case of "hey that wasn't an alpha!" regret sex being ginned up as a rape.

Prediction 5: Feminazi blogs will stick with the victim narrative until the story plays itself out of the zeitgeist. Comments on said blogs and stories will either be pre-emptively closed or "moderated" 24/7.

The only bit I'm unsure about is if PZ Fatboy will try to quietly get out of all this or if he's decided this is the hill worth dying for.

And that's only because all I know of the man is what Vox posts. However, a cursory glance at his blog did reveal at least one "even if they get me" post in the last week. So we shall see.

Meh, that's been the modus lefterandi for at least a couple of decades now. The seriousness of the crime (well, really the degree to which the crime confirms leftist propaganda) is more important than any actual guilt or innocence. Remember, leftists (which includes Feminists) are less concerned with justice and fairness than with conformity. Accusations, trials, crimnal proceedings, all those serve as norming functions, not justice functions.

Besides, they're all selfish little shits anyway, so how the accusations make them feel is far more important than actual guilt or innocence. If piling on the guilt wagon makes them feel good, then the allegations must be true. If thinking about the allegations make them feel bad (Clinton raping Gennifer Flowers) then the must not be true. Solipsism as a political philosophy.

OpenID malcolmthecynic August 15, 2013 10:16 PM

Blogger Some dude August 15, 2013 11:16 PM

There is a bigger question that PZ has not addressed. What is the proper manner to handle such information when one is made aware of it?

PZ skirts the question, but because he function on emotion and not on a set of principles, he opens the information to the public. Whether his decision is good or bad is less important than his method of dealing with it is selfish and reckless. It is selfish because he wishes to primarily assuage his conscience without regard to thinking about whether this is best way to handle such information in general. it is reckless because he shows no consideration to the consequences of his actions.

I am not commenting on whether or not he ultimately did the right thing on his blog. Personally, I think it was the wrong thing. But far worse was the process by which he arrived at his conclusion. Emotional, thoughtless, and without consideration for the general good. This is typical of the lazy selfishness of leftists.

If he had been remotely serious, he would not have mentioned Mr. Sherman by name, and opened his blog up to a discussion of what would be the best way to handle such information. He could have asked experienced counsellors, police officers and psychologists what their take on the issue was, come to a conclusion and then acted as he saw fit. He did none of that. He was made aware of a problem and like a fool did the first thing that his emotions requested.

Anonymous scoobius dubious August 15, 2013 11:24 PM

Ya know, I know perfectly well that your reply to any objection I might make about your posting obsessively over all these matters is gonna be, "Well you don't get it, I don't really care," and that's fine. It may be even healthy, and maybe even correct, what do I know. Really. "He dunk the backboard and he/ Sleep on the couch." As our godmother Kristen Hersch might say.

But I think you're missing something. It's one thing studiedly to not care, and it's another to be submerged, or maybe just to be swimming in Tao so that "caring" is.... what was I saying again? "Did you enjoy your visit to Red Cliff?" So the meaning escapes.

It picks its way upon the blue guitar.

Cheers.

Poz Myers used to be a well-respected member of the Atheist community, on par with Dawkins and Harris (and Hitchens while he was alive). However over the past few years he's jumped off the deep end. Hitching his name to Rebecca Watson of "Skepchick" claim did not help.

Now pretty much no "mainstream" atheists want to be associated with him, and he's dug himself so deep into a hole that he'll never see daylight again.

Also the cognitive dissonance of running a site called FreeThoughtBlogs and banning all commenters who dare to disagree with you on more than 5% of issues is amusing. Then again in New Atheist parlance, "Free Thought" merely means slavish obedience to left-wing politics.

Blogger Doorstop August 16, 2013 2:42 AM

I saw Michael Shermer lecture on behalf of the Skeptics Society at a private college about 15 years ago, after a relative who was attending classes there invited me to tag along. I wasn't happy with him calling religion a "crutch" that some people need but that he considered himself strong enough find unnecessary. But at least during the Q&A afterwards he was at honest enough to state in no uncertain terms that the scientific method excludes any acknowledgment of supernatural causes (much to the dismay of one of the reps of the local Humanist society that was sponsoring his visit...I think they shut down the Q&A shortly after that).

Also, as I've mentioned before, I worked with Jim Hines at his day job about a decade ago. My impression is that he's too much of a gamma and a white knight to even consider cheating on his wife, but perhaps the pride that comes with fame and the desperation of aging will counter that. Hugo Hines? Regardless, I'm immensely entertained by this post, partly because it hits home more than most (at least my solipsism is based in reality, unlike yttik's seemingly ergot-based sense of importance)
