I blame Howard Stern

This news report is so unbelievably awesome, it just makes me glad to be alive at such a glorious moment for humanity:
The interpreter who signed Nelson Mandela's memorial on Thursday for deaf viewers was a fake, according to experts. The man, who signed for a portion of the ceremony including US President Barack Obama's speech, was simply making up his own signs, the Deaf Federation of South Africa has said.... David Buxton, the CEO of the British Deaf Association, said the unidentified man, who was supposed to be signing in South African, was "waving his hands around but there was no meaning."
I'm guessing that one of those signs had a meaning. And that meaning was "Baba Booey to y'all!".

The Glory of Man is his instinct to take the piss out of the powerful and the self-important. About the only thing that would have been funnier would have been a U.S. drone attack accidentally ordered by Obama on the collection of "world leaders".

That is what a hero looks like. If I were on the Nobel Committee, he'd get my vote.

If he'd spent the whole time making that "jerking off" motion with his hand, that would have conveyed the content of the speech perfectly well to the hearing impaired.

Anonymous bob k. mando December 11, 2013 1:27 PM

as to the fake interpreter, i think there is another hypothesis that is just as likely and it hinges on the answer to this question:
how much is a deaf sign language interpreter PAID for such a thing?

another question, what are the requirements for such a position? this man stood up there for hours. he's fluent in English, Afrikaans, tribal languages AND sign language? where there other nationalities speaking?

never mind, i should read the article before running my mouth. durrhurr.

Bogus sign language interpreters are a problem in South Africa, because people who know a few signs try to pass themselves off as interpreters ... they are taking advantage of the deaf community to make money."

Anonymous Big Bill December 11, 2013 2:03 PM

Must be a BEE hire. A SA friend explained the cargo cult mentality of many Africans. "Whites get paid to sit in an office, make telephone calls and have meetings. As a black man I can do that. So you ought to give me an office and a paycheck."

In this case the brutha said "I can wave my hands around expressively when people are talking, just like the white sign language folks are doing. So give me, a black man, that job!"

The notion that there is something deeper, something special, about the hand waving is lost on the fellow.

My guess is that he wasn't ashamed or even embarrassed.

I'd imagine it was a very accurate translation of his speech. Not word for word, of course, but per the recent discussions about getting the context and culture just right when translating a book, I'm certain this captured that Zero was just speaking a bunch of platitudes.

And shouldn't a black sign language interpreter be wearing some gloves that would highlight his hand movements? Like the white gloves I see other sign language interpreters wearing? I guess that must be racissss.

But, I think Mandela might not really be dead, because Obama said "We'll never see the likes of Nelson Mandela again." That makes me expect to see ol' Nelson pop up on the 10 o'clock news saying "No, really, I just had a sore throat. I'm fine..."

No need. Ending their immigration, deporting any of them that were ever illegal (along with their offspring), ending all welfare, including all racial affirmative action (AA is a type of welfare), reducing gov't employment by >90% (another form of welfare blacks obtain disproportionately, blatantly obvious if you've ever been inside a DMV or welfare office) locking up the blacks that commit crimes, have easy concealed carry laws and "stand your ground"/castle laws in all 50 states, reduce the HIV research to a reasonable level -- those would IMO do the same thing, all quite ethically.

Updates on the fake interpreter: Interpreter splains himself!

You believe him?

Anonymous Mark December 12, 2013 6:21 AM

AdognamedOP, I disagree:

First of all, we need to look at education. What have the leftists done to education and literacy across the globe? Now imagine how profound the effect has been on a population already at a high risk of literacy issues. Look at the literacy levels of deaf kids leaving high school, fully half are at at a year 4 level of reading, with 30% functionally illiterate. (sources from http://jdsde.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2007/06/12/deafed.enm020.full)

Focusing on just the signing deaf kids (rather than the ones being educated with an oral focus), here's an example of how bad it is in Australia: In the best state, W.A, only half of educational interpreters are accredited interpreters, the non accredited ones can be hired as early as 6 months into their 2-3 year course, after which only half of the people who take the final accreditation test pass. The private sector will not touch these people (huge liability for one thing, imagine if you as an interpreting agency hired the guy signing for obama to interpret a doctors appointment or something). Until only a few years ago qualified/accredited interpreters were paid exactly the same in schools as the unaccredited interpreters, now it's a few dollars an hour different. Queensland, the worst state, has exactly 0 qualified interpreters working in its schools. To pass the accreditation test you only need a 70% mark. Think about that, the bare minimum is 70%, that's what the kid is getting though an interpreter, if the interpreter is even qualified that is. 'Private sector' and higher ed pay interpreters 2-4x as much, nine times out of then if they're not accredited, it's because they're awful.

The leftist move towards maintreaming/inclusiveness in schools, (as they have done with all kids with all disabilities) is just one way they have royally screwed over the signing deaf (not to mention the burden it puts on the other students and teacher).
"wah, they're handicapable and need to be integrated into mainstream society at every opportunity, wah, you ablist dirtbag, you want to concentrate them? Like in a camp?… specialty schools are so 1970's we are so much more progressive now"
Rather than having cheaper specialty schools with lots of deaf kids, teachers who have experience and training in educating deaf kids and one or two highly qualified and skilled interpreters per 20 or so deaf kids they're stuck in a classroom with nobody they can communicate with, an interpreter for each and every kid but one who doesn't know the language well enough and a teacher who has no idea what to do with a deaf kid (again, like with all other disabilities). And that's just the signing deaf kids…

The leftists and their education policies have seriously screwed these people over. They have made it so that closed captions and subtitles are unsuitable for many, particularly in emergencies. These are actual victims my friend, those people have a lot to answer for.

Got a kick out of the article. I remembered Al Kelly a "guest speaker" who came on as serious commentator. Then he did nothing but double-talk. It was a one-joke act, but it was hilarious.

Something bothered me about Mandela's shtick. He started life as an agitator who would overthrow the white establishment When he got the support of every nation in he world, he succeeded. So what went wrong? He did not prepare his own people to learn the ropes. As a result, they are still dependant on the IMF and other kinds of foreign aid for sustenance and who knows when it will end.

Anonymous Big Bill December 13, 2013 7:26 AM

"The gloves aren't used everywhere, they are a joke in some places, but yeah the contrast with his hands is definitely an issue. "

It isn't "an issue". You assume that someone is watching him. They aren't. You assume that Africans have studied and learned sign language. They haven't.

The interpreter is an African stage decoration: "When important white people speak there is some guy next to them waving his arms around. That is so cool! When I give my next speech I want a guy like that!"

The interpreter is just like all the war medals on Emperor Bokassa 's chest and his ermine-tailed robes.

The medals have absolutely no meaning (other than being shiny and big and gold and just like the white folks do).

But the African sees these things in white movies and wants the white chest decorations.

Real medals have a meaning that is lost on the African. In the West, medals are for doing something very special. They are chest decorations in Africa that indicate the higher status of the wearer.
