Hard BREXIT it is

It's far from over, but the British people are clearly no more interested in the dire threats from Europe than the God-Emperor Ascendant is:
Just a few weeks after the Brexit vote, I was confronted by one of Britain’s most senior bankers at a social event stuffed with the nation’s business elite.  The message was shrill: ‘This is a disaster. You have to help convince the Government we must stay in the single market.’

Now the banker, who has been patrolling the corridors of Whitehall with the same message ever since, has received a similarly robust response from the Prime Minister herself.

Britain will not remain part of the single market. It will not be seeking any off-the-shelf, Norway-style deals. Nor is it interested in a customs union — imposing standardised EU-wide import tariffs — which would limit its ability to forge independent trade deals with the world’s great economies.

Theresa May’s muscular bargaining position with Brussels has been immeasurably strengthened by two factors: the imminent arrival of Donald Trump in the White House; and the sparkling performance of the UK’s economy since June, which has defied all the ‘expert’ predictions of doom. A Trump presidency, we are now promised, will put Britain at the front of the queue for a trade deal — not at the back, as threatened by Barack Obama.

That is enormously significant because the U.S. is Britain’s biggest single trading partner, accounting for 20 per cent of our commerce with the rest of the world, and 6 per cent of the UK’s total output. Britain’s economy is showing a remarkable resilience in the face of Brexit beyond the wildest dreams of those who advocated that we should leave.
The economists and architects of the EU lied to get the nations of Europe into the EU. It shouldn't be terribly surprising to discover that they will lie to try to keep them from leaving and reclaiming their national sovereignty. Indeed, the harder the Europeans argue, lie, and threaten, the more it becomes obvious to everyone across Europe that the Brits, and everyone else, will be better off out of the bankers' corporatist state.

Just as being fond and protective of Israel is in the emotions of most Americans, so is being fond and respectful of England aka the Mother Country. A thousand Slovakians getting killed would on an emotional level bother me less than a couple dozen Brits getting killed.

No, this is not 'Britain First' nonsense, but it is a recognition that for some folk, the average American would go a little more out of the way for than some random other country.

But Brexit WILL make it worse off. For the bankers. So much easier to steal and cheat when the bureaucrats you bribe aren't even elected and their rules can't be dismantled.

I am quite surprised. I don't know what changed May, but it wasn't her own good heart. She, initially, was looking for any and every way to stall or dump Brexit. Either the real danger of going against so many, or big money, got her on board. She's just taking the safer and more lucrative rout for herself. All good, just... I really would like to know what switched her widget from ac to dc... or the other way around.

I don't see why Article 50 needs to be invoked at all by the UK. I think all they need to do is to proceed under the assumption that they are a sovereign nation and go about their business without a thought to it. All invoking it will do is to trigger responses from the EU. The responses from the EU will be different and will require some thought on the part of the European Parliament if it is ignored.
The one person who I would like to hear from, but haven't is John O'Sullivan former editor of National Review, who was a champion of an Anglosphere alliance between English-speaking countries and who I think was driven out of NR partly because this wasn't in line with the growing globalist sentiment there.

As social mood eventually turns down across all measures, the truth is that it simply won't matter even if "Brexit" or any other political divorce promises greater hardship.

When the mania of over-trust turns to suspicion and ultimately rage, men will face near-certain death if it given them the opportunity to rip their adversary's face off.

Telling separatists of any stripe that they'll be spanked if they leave only serves to make them madder. The cultists of the Old Narrative will never grasp this.

May is not to be trusted. When she was Home Secretary she made an annual promise to reduce net migration below 100,000 per year. Instead it has run at all time record levels every year. Her supporters say that is because she was hamstrung by that wastrel Cameron, but I'm not so sure. She's a hardcore authoritarian who took the police state she inherited from Labour and made it much, much worse. She also supports and extended hate speech laws that just backfired on her own Home Secretary who had a "hate incident recorded" for saying that British companies should employ British workers.

While she's not to be trusted she is politically shrewd. And this is a shrewd calculation. Every party except UKIP has come out either strongly in favour of overturning the vote or have been plunged into vicious infighting since the referendum. Including her own.

If a general election were called before Brexit had happened and UKIP were the only party on the Brexit side the electoral calculus is clear. 421 of the 574 parliamentary constituencies in England and Wales voted leave. Even if every constituency in Scotland and Northern Ireland were to vote for remain favouring parties it would be the biggest landslide in the history of British democracy. Only Churchill's Wartime Coalition had a larger majority.

She has some room to manoeuvre, but not much. The 2015 general election returned a very slim majority, much smaller than the number of Tory MPs that loudly backed remain. Labour are in total disarray so that makes things easier, but she also probably has one eye on the Copeland and Stoke-on-Trent Central by-elections coming up. UKIP's new leader is standing in Stoke and it should be interesting.

What happens now will be interesting. Infighting over the EU has brought down each of the last Conservative Prime Ministers (Thatcher, Major, Cameron). The same tensions exist within Toryism as within the Republican movement, with hardcore neoliberal ideologues (the 'Tory Taliban') versus the 'Shire Tory' traditional values types.

The well wishes in the comments here make me optimistic. While most Brits will happily have a go at our cousins across the pond, rest assured we like you a damn sight more than those catamites 21 miles away across the channel.

They had to be lying about an economy working with a unified currency and many different monetary policies. Back when I was in college, I was eager to see how that would work.

Not only has watching the EU economy fail shown its planners aren't any better than I was, watching politicians' reactions to that failure shows their outright distain for the common folk.

Blogger Didact January 18, 2017 1:23 PM

@17,

It is true that Prime Minister May is not to be trusted. She is as much an establishment hack as any of the front-bench Tories.

However, Mrs. May is merely a product of her times. If she decides to hamstring Brexit, she will pay the political price for it.

Brexit will happen whether she likes it or not. The socioeconomic and political trends have swung decisively in favour of nationalism and away from supernational institutions like the EU.

The EUSSR will break apart one way or another. The only question Mrs. May has to answer is whether she is with the British people or against them.

Blogger James Dixon January 18, 2017 1:34 PM

Her best comment on the matter, IMO: "I am equally clear that no deal for Britain is better than a bad deal for Britain."

That's telling the EU to take it or leave it, Britain doesn't care which.

Anonymous Henry Havelock January 18, 2017 1:37 PM

I'm in full agreement. I just think what could look to an outside observer like a principled stand is really just political calculation from a thoroughly dishonest operator.

I doubt very much the EU will still exist to negotiate with 2 years after Article 50 is triggered. Here's hoping Le Pen's in the Elysee Palace by the summer. PVV look like a shoe-in as well, hell, even the Sweden Democrats are leading in the polls.

OpenID basementhomebrewer January 18, 2017 1:46 PM

I kind of agree that there is no need to play by their rules. Just start ignoring their laws and regulations within your sovereign borders. Throw any of their agents out of your government buildings and move on with life.

There is no response short of War for the EU in this instance. I doubt they could get any of the other member nations to play ball on that response. They could slap tariffs on Britain's goods, but if we are being honest they are planning on doing that anyway.

No they're not. German is the largest minority ethnicity claimed by Americans, not the largest. "American" is by far the largest, and Americans were, at the time of the revolution, 85% British, 8% LOW German and 3-4% Dutch.

There's been a fair bit of German settlement since the Revolution, no doubt, but Americans are not at all mostly genetically German.

Blogger pyrrhus January 18, 2017 1:49 PM

The UK has the whip hand in this situation, since Germany, Ireland, and probably most other countries in the EU would immediately plunge into depression without the UK's business. Sounds like Theresa May may have figured this out.
Incidentally, half of Ireland's trade is with the UK, so I think Ireland would be forced to leave the EU if it cut off trade with Britain. The Apple tax issue would be another great incentive.

The other question is going to be if he is going to clean out all the problems. The financial collapse is going to happen at some point. The question is if anyone is going to be courageous enough to expose the Fed's books to sunlight so we can actually see the full extent of the problem.

If not, then we will end up prescribing the wrong solution and dealing with the other problems again later. I suspect Trump will attempt to do the right thing. I am suspicious that the Senate Republicans will stand in his way.

Hey - this is politics, when does trust ever actually come into the equation? When the Behemoth of state starts moving in a favorable direction, enjoy it, get behind it, push your goals through. When the Behemoth starts moving unfavorably, obstruct it, fight it, push against it. The faces, names, so forth don't really matter since they're all lying trolls who only care about sitting in the luxury boxes of life. You just have to push hard enough and long enough for them to get the message: "Go where I tell you." David Cameron, Theresa May, John Major, Margaret Thatcher - all just names and faces with no meaning. Just watch Behemoth and push accordingly.

Why haven't non-Leftists attempted to make their own entertainment yet?" The American film industry won't do it, so why not do it yourselves?

You are asking this question on the blog of breakaway blue SYFY. Castalia house might end up selling movies. It's possible to do a good story on a low budget, but now the best hope is that china busts the jew distribution system.

Trump may be realizing how bad the debt problem really is He has talked about auditing the FED, plant your fruit/nut trees as soon as possible.

Out of the bankster's pocket Hopefully not into the cannibals pot.

Debt is funny money.

It can be created.

Or destroyed.

With the click of a mouse.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you intend on letting people take away your things using 'law'.

But you have guns in America.

Don't you?

And you can get together and protest.

And you get mischievous.

Yes BBKG is right, its not so much that right wingers can't make content. Its that the distribution of content is controlled.

But the internet makes non SJW artists viable whilst simultaneously destroying the credibility of fakes over time.

Thank god for the internet. Otherwise Voxxy would not be viable. And he would have to kiss rings. Trumpy isn't viable without the internet either. Can you remember that era when the President had to tell the american people everything through a (((press))) corps? Trump should go on gab. Hahaha.

Good to see some politicians are still capable of sniffing the political winds of change. Pragmatism reigns. May also has the white knighting card up her sleeve when the media attacks.

Blogger Lovekraft January 18, 2017 6:17 PM

Rand Paul recently raised the first potentially weak point of Trump's administration: entitlements (Social Security, Medicare etc) which are like a political nuke in terms of destruction potential.

But without this hard approach, Paul claims Trump's new budget will just add more debt.

This will leave us open to attack.

How do we spin Trump's decision? If he attacks entitlements, we have to fight the 'dying grandmothers' onslaught. If he doesn't, then we have to react to charges he's a phony.

Tying this to Brexit, I think the New Politicians have to either go all in and let the future judge them, or position themselves that anything that results is because of excessive gov't and destructive immigration policies.

It may not seem that way at first glance, but the UK is in the driver's seat here. They have a trade deficit with the rest of the EU, and the Germans are not going to risk a recession by the sort of punitive trade sanctions some of the other countries are pushing for.

May's just dancing about until she finds out what the French are going to do. They control the other end of the channel tunnel, so its kind of important. If Frexit looks likely then the Brits can get a better deal from the EU.

Perhaps the UK, France and the Netherlands will form their own little Economic Union.

It would need a catchy name: 'The British Empire' has a nice ring to it.

The Fed "debt" never has to be paid at all. The US debt does, but it can and will be reduced by inflation. This has been evident since before 2007.

With huge debt, there's basically two alternatives. You can tax the crap out of the people and pay it off, or you can inflate it away.

If you tax the crap out of the people and pay it off you will protect the value of the dollar. Protecting the value of the US dollar is good for the people who own money, i.e. the rich people and the big corporations who are sitting on huge piles of cash. And it is bad for the people who owe money and pay taxes, i.e. the "forgotten" people that put Trump into office.

On the other hand, inflation is bad for the rich people and big corporations who have lots of cash. Very bad. And it is good for the people who owe money cause they get to pay their debts back in cheaper dollars.

Of these two alternatives, only one of them is good for the "forgotten" people who voted Trump into office. So it should be pretty obvious which one Trump will go for.

The Fed is controlled by rich people who would like to see the value of the US dollar kept high. The vast creation of new dollars called "Quantitative Easing" has been something the Fed was -FORCED- to do by the necessity of keeping the economy out of a truly horrid depression. But the Fed did it only enough to barely keep the economy out of depression. That is, they did it without significant inflation. For Trump to make the Fed actually cause inflation will be a significant change (liberalization) in Fed policy and will require some changes. But do not doubt that Trump understands exactly what the effect of Fed policy is on the forgotten people and the rich banker gangsters / big corporation owners. He will try to inflate but he may not succeed.

Blogger Snidely Whiplash January 18, 2017 10:27 PM

Hahahaha, he thinks rich people keep lots of cash and don't have debt, and poor people who operate on a cash basis are not harmed by inflation.
You have it exactly backwards, princess.
Whatta moron.

Anonymous JustAnotherPairOfEyes January 18, 2017 10:28 PM

Inflation is a traditional objective of populism. Back in the late 19th century the method of inflation was the "free coinage of silver". The increase in the money supply would have been the result of the huge discoveries of silver in the western US. Monetizing that silver would have vastly increased the money supply and so made it much easier for the deplorable (borrowing) classes to pay off their loans. Thus the "Cross of Gold" speech by William Jennings Bryan, i.e. the little man should not be crucified on the cross of the gold standard so that the big guys have their dollar value protected.

Back then the populists ended up with a partial victory. A lot of silver was turned into money and the banks were required to keep silver as banking reserves. A consequence is that banks ended up with -huge- amounts of silver dollars in their basements. Banks moved this around from bank to bank by using vast amounts of carts. And as a result of this huge amount of non-circulating silver dollars, it's possible for coin collectors to get silver dollars from this era in beautifully uncirculated (BU) condition.

Snidely is so stupid that he thinks that the huge amount of money created in QE is in the bank accounts of blue collar working class people. Nope. The working classes spend it as they earn it. The money is in the possession of the rich. Evidently you don't know any.

Anonymous JustAnotherPairOfEyes January 18, 2017 10:35 PM

For how much cash the rich are holding do any google search. You'll find stuff like this:

"Why do the rich hoard so much cash?"
Yet these same wealthy investors have, on average, almost 40% of their portfolio in cash with stocks averaging only 25% of their portfolios!

"And it is good for the people who owe money cause they get to pay their debts back in cheaper dollars."

Dollars only become 'cheaper' if your income rises. Price inflation makes debt worse, because you have less money left to pay it off when you've paid for the things you need to survive day-to-day. Only income inflation reduces the value of debt.

Governments have been inflating the money supply with artificially low interest rates for the best part of twenty years now. How's that working out for the poor?

Don't worry, I'm about as all-in as you can get on the hardest Brexit possible. It's just that while Behemoth goes in this direction on one little thing the borders are still wide open, the police state is getting stronger and being used against the right, and Islam becomes more aggressive and intransigent.

We keep pushing because the opposite means our extinction as a people in the lands our ancestors colonised when the ice caps retreated.

@39

Thank you very much, it is appreciated.

@42

This isn't true. There are very serious problems with most of the prehistory of Europe as commonly understood, and modern genetics is really kicking away the last vestiges of the old theses. It hasn't really filtered through to popular understanding yet.

Good books on this are Stephen Oppenheimer 'The Origins of the British', and any works by archaeologists like Frances Pryor or Barry Cunliffe. Happy to go into more detail if you like but I can bore on for days about this subject.

The Norman Conquest is actually a great anti-immigration story. The Bastard arrived with c. 10,000 men. The native aristocracy was permanently disinherited, and their language ceased to be written down for about 200 years. My mother's maiden name is Norman, but the conquerors were totally assimilated genetically. They were already so similar to the population in England at the time of the conquest that there are no Y-haplogroup or mtDNA markers that can identify Norman input.

More people have arrived in Britain since 2000 than immigrated here in the entire previous history of our nation combined.

@55

It's even worse. The government is pushing a "British values oath" on the people which is all about "tolerance" and "multiculturalism". And to rub it in the Minister responsible for it is… Sajid Javid MP, Member for Bromsgrove.

@78

We've got our own indigenous one and it's suitably gruesome - to be hung, drawn and quartered. The thing they do to Mel Gibson at the end of Braveheart.

Blogger Eric Steiger January 19, 2017 9:23 PM

@90 Also a classic. I just thought the blood eagle would be most poeticaly appropriate since her voice has been her weapon of choice against her people, and impalement seems like it would win just about any "this shit stops...NOW" contest.
