A tale of two techs

SJW-converged Twitter doubles down on its speech-policing:
Twitter has launched a new way to punish users for bad behavior, temporarily “limiting” their account.

Some users are receiving notices their accounts are limited for 12 hours, meaning only people who follow them can see their tweets or receive notifications. When they are retweeted, people outside their network can’t see those retweets.

Some speculate these limitations are automatic based on keywords, but there is no hard evidence.

This would be fine if this was used uniformly to clamp down on harassment, but it appears to be used on people simply for using politically incorrect language.

He claims he got his account limited directly after saying retarded twice. The first time he called a Nintendo policy adding paid extra content to their new Zelda game retarded. The next time he called someone a retard who called him a retard first.
That should help continue to drive down their user base and stock price. Meanwhile, I posted on Gab for the first time using their new Android app. It's pretty slick for a beta, in fact, the only immediate suggestion I have is that they either expand all the Mentions to show the entire post by default, or, alternatively, provide an option to do so.

It's fine to just have a list of all the Follows, Likes, and Reposts, but Mentions usually contains more information that requires viewing.

The Gab Android app beta is currently only available to donors.

Blogger Cataline Sergius February 16, 2017 11:33 AM

Another trick Twitter is doing now is "Content Unavailable". It's used on retweets they don't like. It looks like the original tweet was deleted but if you click on it, it will take you there.

Its their new version of Shadow Banning. And it leaves them in the position of claiming, no that's just a bug. Sorry!!

Yet this bug only infects right wing tweets.

At this point I only use Gab. I occasionally check my Twitter account to see if it has been hacked or still exists but that's all I have to do with it now.

Gab needs to sue apple under anti-trust for the double-standards they're applying in refusing to accept the apple app.

No, you need to shut up, mind your own business, and stop displaying your ignorance. Not only does Gab not need to do that, your statement doesn't even make sense.

I am surprised stock holders, perhaps even board members, have not sued due to the crashing, and pretty obviously intended crashing, of those stocks. A ceo is accountable. So, either their stock holders and corporate interests have agreed to the crash, have been promised it is temporary, or are as I am suggesting defrauding the company of rightful profits for personal/political means. Burn that candle from both ends.

Soo,.... Twitter stock is in free-fall. Gab will eat their lunch. Gud!

I have two requests :

- I confess I want to use their iTunes app. What can I, as a user, do to influence Apple to let me use it? Actually I've been Android man, but the Apple hardware is simply much better. The iOS UI is killing me, lack of back button .... I'd love Android UI on iPad, iPhone. So, what can I do, as a user who spends a pretty penny on iTunes, to get Gab on my iPad?

- Venture Capital. I get it you're building out a subscription based model. As far as investment is concerned..... Have you thought about allowing capital investment? For either Gab or your own Infogalactic? I'm sure there's ways to issue quasi capital that retains all legal control with you, resp. the Gab proprietors. I'd be much interested taking a financial risk via investment, partaking in potential gain as and when it materialises. Probably would require a minimum threshold.

I'm not involved with Gab, but they've already had a bad experience with prospective investors trying to take over the company. Infogalactic will not be taking any investment, as we believe its subscription/ad model will permit it to accomplish the objective of surpassing Wikipedia.

When we are ready to take on Facebook, we will probably accept investment for that project, because we will need considerably more resources. By then, we should have sufficient credibility as a result of Infogalactic's success.

Actually, from latest available financials, TWTR had a $77MM positive cash flow last year. Even if its revenue were to dry up, the operational cash outflow is only $220MM/year; with a $3.8 billion cash-in-hand reserve, it can last around 17 years at zero inflow.

This is all irrelevant, as TWTR is a tool for generating revenue on other markets, financial, information/intelligence, market research. None of these needs TWTR revenue and all sorts of investors (including "sovereign funds," aka fronts for intelligence agencies) will gladly pay to keep the data spigot flowing.

Reversing the common dictum, never ascribe to stupidity that which can adequately be explained by multi-market strategy. 😎

They were taught to virtue signal in college. Now it's just part of their standard communication layer. They don't even really know how to reason except in the tiny "coding" part of their brain.

Blogger Thucydides February 16, 2017 2:55 PM

I think Gab has found the correct play, they are not only free speechers, but are also developing a slick, user friendly product as well. The apolitical people I point in the direction of Gab or Brave are impressed, and generally could not give a rats ass about Alt-right, Ctrl-left or any other political ism unless it pre empty the hockey game on TV. They support a clean, functional user interface.

Infogalactic is a bit more problematic. They essentially see Wikipedia with a different name on top, so don't see the need to change. If/when Infogalactic evolves to further differentiate itself from Wikipedia (and I'm thinking a different look or interface would help a lot), then I suspect the uptake will be a lot faster.

The same issues will probably apply to replacements of FaceBook and YouTube; if they think they are not really getting something different, then the apolitical users (who we need to get onside to denormalize the converged tech companies) will simply say "meh".

My .02 anyway

Blogger Cail Corishev February 16, 2017 3:05 PM

Kentucky Headhunter, I know what you're saying. The left-leaning in tech, especially IT, goes a lot further than self-protection against firing. I think it's a personality type that's prevalent in IT that's also drawn to the Left (or more specifically, away from the Right).

#1 They're socially libertarian. When the Internet was first taking off but you still had to be kind of a geek to get online and figure out how to connect your modem and run the software and stuff, I remember an online poll of the upcoming 1996 presidential election that had the Libertarian candidate winning. That's how libertarian-leaning geeks are, compared to the general public. They want to be left alone to do their own thing -- and not be ridiculed for it -- and they think they're willing to concede the same to others. Even if they're economically libertarian, the social aspects tend to be more emotional and win out, so this has driven them left, since the Left appeared to be more tolerant.

#2 is that they lean very atheist. Join any IT chat room or discussion group, and unless it's specifically a "Christian IT" group, you'll find a bunch of people who think religion is a silly opiate of the dumb masses, and they take it for granted that everyone else in the group feels the same. Ask them their favorite Star Trek TNG episode, and the overwhelming response will be "Who Watches the Watchers?", the one where Picard gives his "There are no gods, religion is an artifact of the dark ages, and you're on your own" speech. This drives them away from the "Religious Right" bogeyman and toward the Left.

Reason #3: they tend to be clueless about and hopeless with women, which often leads to virtue-signaling by accepting everything they're told women think (girls are being kept out of tech, for instance), without even realizing they're doing it. They're not just parroting feminist memes; they absorb them, and then hope that their outrage on behalf of women will earn them female respect (and pussy, ultimately).

Reason #4, that I'm less sure about: Nerds love saving-the-universe stories, whether it's a fantasy novel, a superhero movie, or a computer game where you defeat the forces of evil, right? Nothing wrong with that, but the Left also offers grandiose saving-the-world theories. If you're spergtastic enough, maybe you can't tell the difference.

Blogger D. Bay February 16, 2017 3:08 PM

Yo Vox, off topic, and you may know this already, but you are quoted in the last paragraph of this New York Times article from 2/16/17:

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/16/magazine/youtubes-monster-pewdiepie-and-his-populist-revolt.html

"The full character of the burgeoning politics of platforms remains to be seen. But right-wing movements have found early traction and see opportunity. Even as farce, Kjellberg’s performance has been illustrative, and a small number of eager observers say they hope that, as backlash mounts, it will be galvanizing. “If Pewdiepie wasn’t #AltRight before,” Vox Day, a former video-game designer and an alt-right leader posted on Gab.ai, a private, Twitterlike service popular with the movement, “he is now.”"

I encounter this sometimes over at the Adobe forums with at least one other fellow Adobe Community Professional who voices her disdain for Trump. I immediately call her out on it. (Because, really, it's not a political forum and what was she expecting? An echo chamber? We're there to help creatives, not lecture them.)

Good points, but do not underestimate the brainwashing that every college grad under 30 has been through. The push for more women in computing is everywhere. Posters in every hallway, special tutoring and meetups that are women-only, professors that include that stuff in lectures. ACM meetings that are entirely run by and for the girl students.

Students are being taught to virtue signal as part of regular conversation, and punished indirectly by social snubbing when they don't do it enough. So no surprise they carry that with them.

@56, Good point about college. What I said also applies to geeks I know who never went to college, but no doubt they pick some of it up from colleagues who did.

The good news about the points I listed is that some of them are turning in our favor. The Left is being shown as the true side of intolerance. It's even becoming the side of religious intolerance, as it embraces Islam. Feminism too is hitting a wall, and the Internet is making it possible for socially awkward men to learn some reality about women. All these changes will tend to shift geeks from Left to Right, and I'd argue that we've already seen the beginning of that in aspects of GamerGate and the pushback against speech codes in software.

Nah. I did hang out with the "bad boy" crowd (my shtick was going after idiots at both ends, SJWs and Neo-Nazis), some of whom did, in fact, get busted for crimethink.

But what took me out was simply crimeregistration. I registered with YouTube back in the stone age. After the takeover I didn't register with Google, so they tried to force me by locking my account until I did.

They did give me plenty of time. My account wasn't actually purged until last year.

But by that time my mindset had gone from "Look guys, you've got all my registration information, do with it what you will, but I really just don't want a Google account" to "Fuck you guys and your extortionist methods."

And then I got a Samsung Android tablet. Oops.

A great alternative to college is the trades. You can get paid to learn, and then you have a skill that can make you money even if no one else is hiring. (Because you can go off on your own or build something for yourself.)

Nobody knows how to do anything anymore, so the ones who do can make decent money. And run their own businesses without being corporate lackeys, which to my way of thinking is even better.

Why are they there? They are there to network, to get to know other people at other employers, people who might need their skills in a couple of years.
In that environment, you don't shitlord. You just don't.
There is no perceived benefit to letting it be known you are on the right, and much percceived benefit to virtue signalling, "I'm a proud member of the herd, and I'm even angrier about unfairness than you are" behavior.
There is a serious perceived risk to revealing Rightist sentiment. There is no perceived risk to revealing Lefist sentiment.

That's because Conservatives have historically ignored politics in domains where politics are not particularly relevant. Like, say, hiring decisions. Lefties have no such compunctions.

So Righties learn to keep their mouths shut, Lefties are encouraged to spew.

Blogger Cail Corishev February 16, 2017 5:14 PM

Bard, there's an extension for some browsers that will automatically convert Wikipedia links to Infogalactic links.

For your own direct searches, most browsers will let you set up a search shortcut. Try going to Infogalactic and right-clicking on the search box, and see if your browser offers to save it as a search. Then just give it a search key of 'i' or 'ig', and you're all set.

Some browsers may require you to create a search in your settings. If so, you may need to input a string like this: https://infogalactic.com/w/index.php?search=%s

Look at other searches that are already setup in your browser for comparison. If anyone out there is using conkeror, put this in your .conkerorrc:

define_webjump("ig", "https://infogalactic.com/w/index.php?search=%s");

"A great alternative to college is the trades."

It wasn't too long ago that even kids going to college were advised to learn a trade as backup, or to just plain acquire an understanding of how The Real World operates.

In old money the aristocracy sent their children to college to become gentlemen. It was education, not job qualification. It was expected that they would have a trade even if, perhaps, "managing the shire" stretches the definition of "trade" a bit. A career as a military officer if a second son was common. The modern military academies are "democratized" versions of the aristocratic model.

Twatter CEO Jack Dorsey sprains his arm patting himself on the back as he compares the mood in the US to the Arab Spring.

Dorsey touted his social media company as still one of the biggest, if not the largest, platforms for political, civic, and cultural conversations. "

So that's why his company is busy suppressing anyone who doesn't toe the line in the political, civic and cultural conversation, because Twatter is so important.

Nice echo-chamber you got there, Jack, gonna be a shame when something happens to it. Oh, looks like something already is happening.
